Holistic Approach

At TÅ· Derwen, we take a holistic and child-centred approach to supporting children and young people with Additional Learning Needs (ALN). We recognise that every young person is unique, with their own history, strengths, challenges, and aspirations.

Our team works closely with each child to understand their full range of needs—emotional, physical, social, sensory, and cognitive—and to develop personalised support that promotes long-term well-being and growth. Care plans are designed to be flexible and responsive, incorporating therapeutic input, structured routines, sensory activities, and life skills development.

We aim to build each young person’s confidence, resilience, and sense of identity, creating a safe and inclusive environment where they feel heard, valued, and respected. By focusing on the whole person—not just their diagnosis or behaviour—we help our children move towards happy, healthy, and fulfilling futures.

Our Model of Care

At TÅ· Derwen, our model of care is rooted in a therapeutic, trauma-informed approach tailored to meet the complex needs of children and young people with Additional Learning Needs (ALN). Many of the young people we support have experienced early adversity, trauma, or disrupted attachments, and our care model is designed to promote safety, stability, and emotional healing.

We embed the Trauma Recovery Model (TRM) and the PACE approach (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy) into all aspects of daily life at the home. These frameworks guide our understanding of each child’s emotional development and help us to respond to behaviours with compassion, insight, and consistency.

Our trained staff team use these approaches to:

  • Build secure, trusting relationships

  • Provide structure and predictability

  • Promote emotional regulation and resilience

  • Support children in processing their experiences at their own pace

Therapeutic care is not limited to formal interventions—it is woven into every routine, interaction, and support plan. By creating a calm, nurturing, and responsive environment, we help young people feel safe, valued, and understood.

Ultimately, our model of care supports children to heal from past experiences, develop new skills, and work towards a brighter and more fulfilling future.

Positive Behaviour Support

Positive Behaviour Support at TÅ· Derwen

At TÅ· Derwen, we take a proactive and person-centred approach to Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), tailored to meet the individual needs of children and young people with Additional Learning Needs (ALN). We understand that all behaviour is a form of communication, and we work to identify the underlying needs, triggers, and environmental factors behind each young person’s behaviour.

Our trained team creates consistent, structured, and nurturing environments where young people feel safe, respected, and understood. We focus on building trusting relationships, promoting emotional regulation, and developing communication strategies that empower children to express themselves in positive and meaningful ways.

Positive reinforcement is embedded throughout our daily practice, with praise, encouragement, and rewards used to strengthen desired behaviours and build each child’s confidence and motivation. We strive to avoid the use of physical intervention, which is only ever used as a last resort to prevent serious harm, in line with approved guidelines and with full debrief and reflection afterward.

By embedding PBS into routines, care planning, and therapeutic support, we help each young person develop the skills and confidence they need to thrive—reducing behaviours of concern and improving overall quality of life.
